After a three-year hiatus, the highly anticipated Cross Country Challenge returned to the Hills in September 2022. This has been one of the flagship fundraisers for the Rotary Club of Castle Hill for many years but, sadly, has been in hibernation due to the challenges of COVID-19. It was like welcoming a friend back from a long absence.
Restarting an event can be challenging, but the organising committee demonstrated fearless dedication, staffing stalls in shopping centres, consistently canvassing local businesses and fearlessly festooning flags at events.
A fun event for all ages and groups, multiple courses catered for everyone from casual joggers through to professional runners. Families were encouraged to take part, along with a fancy dress option, while many four-legged friends joined in too.
The route took participants around the historic Bella Vista Farm, a 20-acre rural setting in the Hills Shire. It was a beautiful day, the sun shone, and a gentle breeze was in the air, making it the perfect weather for a run.
The event attracted hundreds of people from all walks of life. The fun run started with a warm-up session led by a fitness instructor to ensure participants were ready for the run. There were plenty of volunteers along the way, cheering on the participants. The atmosphere was fantastic, with everyone encouraging each other, regardless of whether they were running or walking.
The highlight of the event was the charity fundraising. Participants could donate directly to the charity or raise funds by getting sponsored for their run. This year’s funding recipients were Headspace, Youth Insearch and Positive Vibes Foundation, all promoting and supporting positive mental health in the community. Many prizes were available, not just for the fastest but also for the best dressed, highest fundraiser, highest fundraising team, and a raffle for every entrant.
The triumphant return of the fun run proved a huge success. It was an excellent opportunity for families and professionals to unite, promote health and wellness, and raise money for a worthy cause.
The event was a testament to the community’s resilience in the face of adversity. It is safe to say that everyone is looking forward to the next charity fun run already.
The 2023 event – renamed Run For the Hills – will be held at Bella Vista Farm Park on Sunday 10 September. For more information and to register, visit www.runforthehills.com.au
