The Roaring Twenties came to Rolleston, NZ, on October 1, when Rolleston College’s auditorium was transformed into the ‘Gatsby Mansion’ for the Rolleston Rotary Gatsby Ball.
Around 220 guests turned up for a night of wining, dining and dancing, with music provided by 10-piece band Sound Sensation.
“What was remarkable was seeing the young demographic of those in attendance enjoying a fantastic night out, all in the name of showcasing an organisation that unites individuals and sees people creating lasting change within their communities,” club president David Lewes said.
Rolleston Rotary is a new style club in New Zealand’s newest Rotary district – D9999. It was chartered just over two years ago and has established itself firmly in the local community by reaching out to local businesses in the growing new township.
The club was given sponsorship money by a building company, which is opening new housing developments in the area, on the basis that it would be used for an event to involve and attract locals.
The evening was catered for by the talented Rolleston College senior hospitality students and a local winery set up a bar, with all profits going back to Rolleston Rotary for use in the community.
The club saw the ball as a great opportunity to help the hospitality students learn about budgeting, food preparation and set up of an event.
Sound Sensation was a big hit, with almost everyone instantly taking to the dance floor dressed in their 1920s getup.
The talk on the town is that the club is planning another ball for next year, with the possibility of selling twice as many tickets.
Their example of planning, teamwork and thinking outside the square has given the club great exposure and raised its profile, as well has helping the Rolleston College students and local businesses.
